COUNTS/TINKER CYCLICAL CONTEST
Chairman: EricaVosburg Co-Chairman: Resa Carrell
Entry Mailing Address: 2200 Heather Ridge Drive, Flower Mound, Tx 75028
est: November 15, 20 Four Honors Recitals: November 15, 2008 UTA-Irons Hall Times: approximately 10:30 a.m. / 12:30 p.m. / 3:00 p.m. / 5:00 p.m. ENTRY DEADLINE: Saturday, November 1, 2008 This event is a competition. There will be four groups of students scheduled during the day. These groups will be determined solely by playing times, not by age or grade. Following each of the four groups, there will be an Honors Recital for those students who receive a I+ rating. Trophies are awarded to those I+ students who perform at their assigned Honors Recital. Students must perform in the recital in order to receive a trophy. Judges will select approximately the top 15 % of students to receive the I+ designation.
PLEASE READ: Teachers need to inform students of the Honors Recital time that corresponds to their group, and students need to plan accordingly in order to be present and available to perform if selected. Students may only perform at the Honors Recital that corresponds to their scheduled playing time. Please refer to the Non-Competing Guidelines if you have a student who would not like to be considered for the Honors Recital.
Critique sheets will be returned to students in Irons Hall at the conclusion of each group and the Honors Recital will follow immediately. Teachers should make arrangements for their critique sheets to be picked up by another teacher if they or the students are unable to pick them up themselves.
1. Expect critical judging at this competition. 2. Each entrant will receive a ribbon and a critique sheet. 3. The period for the 2008 Cyclical Contest are the Romantic/Impressionistic Periods. Students may play any piece originally composed for keyboard from approximately 1815-1920. 4. No transcriptions will be allowed. 5. The fee will be $15.00 per entry. If your selection exceeds 5 minutes, an additional $15.00 fee must be paid. Please be clear on your entry sheet and request enough time from the contest chairman to cover your student’s needs. If the piece does exceed 5 minutes, send two judging sheets to the contest.
Guidelines for Non-Competing Students AMTA Counts/Tinker Cyclical and Jazz/Pop Contests
A student may choose to enter the Cyclical Contest or the Jazz/Pop Contest as a non-competing student. If so, he/she will not be eligible to perform in the corresponding Honors Recital. The non-competing student will be eligible to receive all ratings, including a I+, provided that certain guidelines are followed. Non-competing students will receive the appropriate ribbon, but will NOT be eligible to receive a trophy.
Overall guidelines 1. Students are considered NON-COMPETING if they will not be available to play in the Honors Recital for ANY reason. They will receive their judging sheets immediately after their performance for the judge. 2. “NON-COMPETING” must be clearly written on the judging sheet before the student enters the judging room. The monitor should also be verbally informed so that he/she may remind the judge. 3. If a student does not inform the monitor and judge of non-competing status prior to playing, then the student will have to wait to get the judging sheet from his/her teacher after the conclusion of the contest. The teacher will then need to make sure that NON-COMPETING is written on the judging form and change the student from an A event to a B event (see Outstanding Musicianship guidelines).
Teacher responsibilities: 1. Discuss prior to the contest whether the student will be competing or non-competing. 2. Give students and parents instructions on informing the monitor, and make sure that NON-COMPETING is written on the judging sheet. 3. Inform the student of the B status of a non-competing event as relates to the Outstanding Musicianship Trophy.
**It is irresponsible and unfair for a teacher to knowingly allow a student who is unable to perform in the Honors Recital to potentially take the place of another student who is willing and able.
ENSEMBLE AND CONVENTION STUDENT AFFILIATE Fees: $15 for tryouts, $15 to register the student’s name in the program, both fees due at the February tryout time.

The Convention will be in the metroplex June 11th - 14th, 2009 at the HYATT REGENCY HOUSTON, 1200 LOUISIANA STREET, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77002. Rehearsals will be arranged in April and May and will continue through the first week in June. Please encourage students to try out only if they will have to miss less than three rehearsals.
STUDENT AFFILIATE ENSEMBLE MUSIC - Assign pieces to students according to their ability rather than strictly by grade level. Teachers normally try to apportion Primo and Secondo parts evenly within their studios.

Student’s Name Grade in School
Teacher’s name Teacher’s phone number
All competing students must play during the time period assigned to their grade level. The High School students will play first, followed by the Jr. High, and the contest will continue, backwards through the grade levels, as the day progresses. If you do not wish for your student to be considered for the Honors Recital, please mark the festival entry form “NON COMPETING”, and the judge will grade the student as a festival entrant, and will not consider the performance for the Honors Recital to follow.
This could be a good choice for a student who may not be equipped to compete with other students of the same school grade level, but who would still like to enter and play in the festival portion of the event. These students will still be eligible for a I+ rating, but it will not qualify them for the honors recital, nor will their grade count toward fulfilling the contest requirement for the Outstanding Musicianship Award. These students may also play at any convenient time during the day. They are not required to play during the specific time allotted to their respective grade level. Please be sure to note the non-competing status on the index card, if you know in advance, and inform the chairman of any special time request you may have. Then, be certain to clearly mark “NON COMPETING” on their critique sheet before the judge hears them play.
All other students will be judged as competitors, and will be included in the group from which the judges will name the I+ Finalists. As soon as the judges have made their decision, the I+ Finalists will be announced from the stage in Irons Hall. They will then each perform their winning pieces. Students in Grades 1 – 6 will all be awarded trophies after this recital. For students in Grades 7 – 12, this honors recital will also be a second competition, from which the judges will select 1st – 4th place winners who will receive larger trophies. All other 7th – 12th grade honors recitalists will receive Honorable Mention rosette ribbons.
STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR THE HONORS RECITAL MUST STAY AND PERFORM IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THEIR TROPHY OR RIBBON. ANYONE LEAVING PRIOR TO THE AWARDS CEREMONY (IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING EACH RECITAL) WILL FORFEIT HIS OR HER AWARD. PLEASE CAREFULLY EXPLAIN THIS RULE TO YOUR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS. DECISIONS OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL, AND WILL NOT BE CONTESTED.
Overall guidelines: 1.

STUDENT AFFILIATE STUDENT AFFILIATE
Student Affiliate is a “subset” of TMTA teachers and students. Teachers join by enrolling at least 1 student. There is no teacher fee. Membership is $10.00 per student each year, until the first deadline of September 15th. Students will then be charged a $1.00 late fee, making the total $11.00 after September 15th. Dues will remain $11.00 until the second deadline of January 5th. On January 5th, dues will go up to $15.00 per student. This last raise from $11.00 to $15.00 is a penalty to encourage teachers to send their dues in early, instead of just before the theory test.
There are two ways to enroll students: by computer email, and by postal service mail.
Instructions for email enrollments: Each teacher receives a form via email from TMTA, along with instructions. Save a copy of the form into a computer file before you try to type on it. Fill out the form exactly as instructed. Do not change the form in any way, or delete names of students already on the form. To enroll a student, simply type in the new grade level for the year 08-09. Leaving the new grade level blank means the student is not returning. Then add any new students to the bottom of the list, alphabetically. Send the completed form via email as an attachment to: Toni Zavatson trmuzic@sbcglobal.net. Then, send one check for $10.00 per student, payable to AMTA, to: Toni Zavatson, 1903 Juanita Dr., Arlington, TX 76013.
Instructions for postal service enrollments: Use only the form “Student Affiliate Registration for Teachers’ included in the yearbook—see Table of Contents. First make a photocopy of the blank form in case you need to enroll more students later. Alphabetize your students by last name, first name, without grouping them by grade levels. Send your completed form along with a check for $10.00 per student, payable to AMTA, to: Toni Zavatson, 1903 Juanita Dr., Arlington, TX 76013.
All member teachers receive the Student Affiliate Handbook, which outlines procedures and state-wide event guidelines in detail. Student Affiliate activities (Composition, Theory Test, Jr/Sr. Solo, Ensemble, and World of Music), are open to Student Affiliate members only.
**IMPORTANT** This year, TMTA will again be watching for correct spellings and grade levels, and checking events such as the Theory Test to be certain that students are S.A. members. Mistakes on the form could cost the student, teacher, or the association a fine.
THEORY TEST STUDENT AFFILIATE
FALL: OCTOBER 28 SPRING: JANUARY 31 BOTH TESTS ARE AT UTA
Please read all the information and entry forms about the Theory Test. Enrollment forms for the test and to order medals are included in the yearbook – see Table of Contents. Please use these forms! The chairman can no longer order extra tests. You must order them from TMTA. See TMTA Magazine. Sign your students up by SCHOOL GRADE level. For exceptions to this, consult the SA Handbook. Gold (98 - 100), silver (94 - 97), and bronze (90 - 93) medals are awarded for scores above 90% unless the student did not take the test on his grade level. Teachers may request certificates from the chairman for students who score above 70%. Make-up tests will be held at UTA on the day following the test. The Fall makeup is for high school only. The Spring makeup is for all levels. Both are to be used for EMERGENGIES ONLY. Call chairman if you have someone taking the make-up test. Students must pass the theory test to participate in any state-wide event. (Ensemble Team, Jr.-Sr. Solo Festival, Composition Contest.)
Consult the Student Affiliate Handbook for “Required Testing Levels for Pianists”
REMEMBER:
All students signed up for the theory program MUST be members of Student Affiliate. This year the state is imposing fines on teachers ($50.00) and on students ($15.00) who enter Student Affiliate activities without first paying their Student Affiliate dues. A fine of $200.00 will be assessed on any organization that either has an excessive number of members who are noncompliant or persistently has a few.
I need your THEORY ENROLLMENT FORM no later than September 23 for the fall test and January 13 for the spring test. You will note that this is earlier than usual but Toni and I have to compare forms to see if all students that are registered to take the theory test are also members of Student Affiliate. Please use the THEORY TEST ENROLLMENT FORM in your yearbook.
Fill in your MEDAL ORDER FORM after the fall test and again after the spring test. Plan to mail the Medal Order Form to me in the spring as soon as you pick up your tests and verify the grades.
Remember to order study tests for your students so they will be familiar with the format of the test at their grade level. This is important because all students are under a time constraint. They must be familiar with the testing format BEFORE they take the test. Call me if you need individual test levels.
IF YOU HAVE SEVERAL STUDENTS TAKING ANY GIVEN TEST, YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO HELP. We need at least 14 people to run EACH test.
Thanks for all your help and your excellent teaching!!! Keep up the good work. See you in the fall.
